Removing Fluoride for Public Water Treatment Plant
A study was carried out in a public water treatment plant which draws it's water source from a lake. The water source contained Fluoride with concentration of 1.30ppm at it's highest level. It also contains 0.225ppm of Arsenic in the water source. For the current treatment, the public water treatment plant uses Ferric Chloride (FeCl3) to remove Arsenic, Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) to remove bacteria and increase the Oxidation-Reduction-Potential (ORP), Caustic Soda and Polymer. The water treatment plant also uses Ultra-Filtration and Reverse Osmosis system but the presence of Fluoride in the water source threatens the lifespan of the Reverse Osmosis Membrane.
In order to solve this problem, we have proposed the use of Hyfor as an additional chemical for the treatment in order to reduce the fluoride content in the water source without causing any disruption towards the existing chemical treatment system. What we found out is that by using 5 ppm of Hyfor chemical works well with the existing treatment of Ferric Chloride in reducing the Fluoride level in the water. The chemical treatment have successfully remove 70% of fluoride from a concentration of 1.02ppm to 0.301ppm which is below the safe consumption limit of 0.6ppm.
